Nestled in the Guatemalan highlands about an hour outside of Guatemala city is the charming town of Antigua. As you walk through the city stunning colonial architecture colors your view while gigantic, unreal looking volcanoes rise up all around the city. On a clear day you can look to the west and see Volcán de Fuego spewing lava and ash into the sky.
Antigua was built by the Spanish in 1543 to act as the capital of Guatemala. Here the Spanish consolidated their military, political, and economic power, creating the seat from which they would rule the region for over 200 years. However, as you enter the city, it’s clear that the true rulers of the area are not the Spanish, nor any other people, but the towering volcanoes that dominate the landscape.
Home to local Guatemalans, expats, and tourists, Antigua is a melting pot of cultures with no shortage of things to do. It’s a beautiful city to simply wander through, appreciating the antiquated building style, cobblestone streets, and local markets.
